After a relatively forgettable decade or so that saw commercial hit Aladdin but a fair share of failures including King Arthur and The Man From Uncle, Gentlemen sees Ritchie return to the genre that made his name stand out from the crowd for the first time since 2008's RocknRolla and it's great to see the visually talented and energetic creative back on deck in a universe of British crims that he knows so well.
Recruiting an all star cast led by American import Matthew McConaughey as marijuana kingpin Mickey Pearson, Charlie Hunnam as the softly spoken steak loving Raymond and a scene stealing Hugh Grant as slimy investigator/paparazzi fiend Fletcher, Gentlemen has Ritchie and his players navigate a rather complicated crime yarn that doesn't always gel together efficiently but when it does, you're quickly reminded as to why you feel in love with Ritchie crime capers in the first place.
With Raymond and Fletcher telling the films story over a long night time set conversation, Gentlemen takes us on a ride through the underbelly of British crime tropes as we visit drug dens, soccer matches, royal estates, corner pubs and more tea connoisseurs than a Tetly convention and while the yarn is perhaps less action packed and visually inventive than we've come to expect from Ritchie offerings, the director's trademark character creation and dialogue work is still a cut above the usual.
With barely a moments respite, Ritchie keeps things moving at a rapid pace as additional players like Colin Farrel's Coach, Henry Goldings criminal upstart Dry Eye and Michelle Dockery's fiery Rosalind partake in proceedings that give you little time to think or ask questions about what you are seeing, other than the fact it's all done in a tongue in cheek way that shows off the fun side of Ritchie that is what we love most about the British wunderkind.
The journey of Gentlemen may never end up taking us to the outstanding destination or culmination that we hope for as we watch a bunch of deceiving and scheming players act up around the sale of Mickey Pearson's criminal enterprise but there's little denying the fact that the easy to watch, curse-ridden and well played out journey we partake in is a thoroughly enjoyable one, without ever becoming a downright memorable one.
Final Say -
It's great to see Guy Ritchie back doing what he does best and while The Gentlemen never reaches the dazzling heights of the directors best works, this is a step back in the right direction for a filmmaker who had lost his sense of purpose.

Walter Hill, Jean-Pierre Melville or more recently Michael Mann could have made this but Diao's use of flashbacks to propel the story and his superb use of locations certainly give this an edge. Despite the fatalistic tone it's hardly what you would call existential despite moving at a fairly leisurely pace. The plot isn't always easy to follow and sometimes it's hard to know who belongs to whose gang or who's a cop and who isn't.
As a cop killer on the run, Ge Hu is as cool as they come; in another lifetime Delon or Belmondo might have played this part and Lun-Mei Kwei is excellent as the film's femme fatale. In the end there is more atmosphere than action and the film's look finally overwhelms its content but it's great that in this day and age this kind of gangster film is being made and that China has taken such a fundamentally American genre and twisted it to its own ends.

I found out recently that while the emoji movie won a razzie a year back, Arctic dogs will still be considered the worst major animated film of the 2010s as a whole. Children's animated adventure, introduced with a short live action backstory where Marla (a teenage girl) gets her own passport and wants to travel. Late one evening Marla is babysitting Charlie (her brother) there's a knock at the door, and the police are there. We realise their parents have been in a tragic road accident.
The plot jumps forward 4 years and Marla is responsible for Charlie, her traveling ambition has been shelved. Charlie has a squabble with Marla and runs off, Marla is able to track his whereabouts via a phone app. Marla finds Charlie at a games convention and they are both sucked into a colourful, animated Playmobil adventure.
They get separated, the plot switches to a rescue mission involving several characters in different action and chase scenes with some musical numbers.
This is aimed at very young audience, the movie won't appeal much to parents, especially as there are much better Lego movies to compare with.
I laughed twice. Mya (our granddaughter) liked it, she's 9 years old.
Stay in your seats for a short post credit scene, taster to a potential for a sequel.

To come! lies "Marla" with a straight face to her little brother to conclude the "franchise" non-starter PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE. During a weekend when one film was raking in upwards of 33,600 per screen, the Super Smart Hollywood Moguls threw this flick up on more than 2,500 screens nationwide and saw it capture well under 1% of that more appealing film's per-screen take to go down as one of our history's biggest flops ever. Needless to say, I was the ONLY person viewing PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE during a prime showtime in a 400-seat theater. (It was not unlike sitting through a Detroit Tigers or Tampa Bay Rays home contest, but without even having a shot of coming away with a foul ball! Perhaps the best thing I can say about PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE is that all of its rain delays were only on the screen. For those viewers who have always hankered for a horror flick featuring "Barney, the Purple Dinosaur" as the main villain, PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE is likely to float your boat. For everyone else, this movie merits a "Buyer: Beware! warning.

The narrative is like a car that revs up from zero to 100mph and then suddenly comes down to zero the next moment. To again rev up to 100mph as the stories toggle between present and past. I could hear people yawning and taking an early loo break during the flashback scenes and songs. Anil Kapoor as the encounter specialist gives an awesome performance. Definitely the best of the lot. Kunal Khemu as an upright police officer gives a restrained performance. Decent job. Aditya Roy Kapoors hunky body might have the ladies drooling but as a protagonist he is the weakest link amongst the three male leads. Does not connect with the audience and leaves a lot to be desired. Patani is hot, sexy and a treat to the eye. Does a decent job in the acting department too. On the Music front, the title track is nice and hummable. Action scenes are decently shot. Direction by Mohit Suri is just about Ok. Verdict: The trailer had raised a lot of hopes about it being a twisted action thriller. However the weak storyline pulls it down and makes it an average film. The most striking scenes feature the blonde character walking along the shore against a relatively light-blue sea. You have to see it to experience how beautiful those scenes are. But some of the interior scenes have face lighting that will make you think of Rembrandt. (The movie is about a painter, so it's not surprising that the lighting of faces should be very important. ) There are other scenes where you have one deep red dress against a white background, again to very striking effect. The information you find here is either from my book, "Behind The Walls"- or added information that has come to light during my continued research and investigating since the book was published. Some of the newer information that is listed here, I had previously posted on my "Behind The Walls" Facebook Page within the last year or so. Although I do not go into full detail in this post on all the deaths of the boys, I will more than likely dedicate more blogs to each of the boys in the future. Below you will find a list of all the boys buried at the cemetery, along with their dates of birth and death. THE FIRST TWO DEATHS AT PRESTON- WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? According to the Biennial Report dated August 1, 1896, Preston School of Industry’s Physician A. L. Adams report states that given the conditions the boys were in when committed to the school, they were not surprised by the high rate of “hospital inmates” as he put it. In fact, he speaks of the entire facility have been exposed to some of the worst illnesses including, incipient phthisis, typhoid fever, scarlet fever, epidemic influenza, tonsillitis, malarial fever and pneumonia as well is chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, chorea and the regular fractures, bruises, abscesses and contusions. What I found quite interesting is the fact he speaks of having only two deaths since the school opened and that no d eaths occurred that year (1896), thus the two deaths occurred during 1895. He goes on to state that the death rate was remarkably low due to the fact most of the boys were in poor health when arriving at Preston despite their lifestyles, habits and “general dissipation”. He goes on to state, “ One death was due to an accidental burn, resulting in intestinal ulceration, and one was caused by pulmonary congestion---was sick when he entered the School. Each was accorded decent interment on the grounds of the Institution, and their resting-places were properly marked; so that, if in the future their parents or friends so desire, they may be moved to other places for burial. ” According to records that have been out there for many years, in fact even the information I found for my book, the two boys buried in the cemetery behind Preston during 1895 were Adolf Antron and Grant Walker. It was reported that Adolf Antron, who died on February 20, 1895, died from pulmonary edema which corroborates the doctor’s report. However, Grant Walker died on June 17, 1895 allegedly from typhoid fever … the report says the other ward died from an “ accidental burn, resulting in intestinal ulceration. ” I find this very interesting and wonder what really happened and what other information that has been reported or recorded is in fact, incorrect? Copyright: J. Rubio Ward No. 170, Nicholas Hamilton Nicholas Hamilton was received at The Preston School of Industry in 1895, and he died on May 17, 1898. The story behind Nicholas Hamilton's death is quite murky. You see, the Biennial Report states that he died from “ pulmonary tuberculosis” and that he was kept “ isolated” from all the boys. It also says they used “ strict antiseptic precautions ” to avoid contamination with the other wards, but other aspects to the story make me question the validity of this. If he was so contagious and so ill, why is it that only 6 months earlier he was well enough to attempt to escape? And why did Superintendent O'Brien risk his own health by having such close physical contact with him? A sworn affidavit by Preston's acting physician E. E. Endicott stated: "A youth by the name of Nick Hamilton, in an endeavor to escape, had sustained a sprained knee. When called in to attend the injured lad I found him lying in the hospital suffering great pain. I examined the knee and found it badly swollen and inflamed. Dr. A. Adams of Ione had also examined him and confirmed diagnosis. Treatment was at once instituted with a view to relieving the suffering boy, when the Superintendent appeared and desired to examine the injury. He rudely grasped the boy’s limb, and to our astonishment began vigorously flexing, extending and rotating the limb, heedless of the yells of pain emanating from the tortured boy, his only reply being “LIE STILL, I’M BOSS HERE!! ”- If he was so ill, wouldn't it have been mentioned in the affidavit? It might have even helped the case against O'Brien, being that the Superintendent was brutalizing a sick, frail boy. But no, it was never mentioned. That leads me to believe he may not have been ill at all, and that the " confinement " he was sent to, was because the incident with the ward brought shame and scandal on O'Brien and threatened his reputation. Nicholas Hamilton died only 6 months after the scandal broke in the papers.... a coincidence? We are left only to speculate now. Deadly Night Swim Here is a photo of the swimming hole at the Preston School of Industry. One of the stories I talk about in my book, "Behind The Walls, " was the drowning of Tehema Vann on the evening of June 6, 1914. According to official reports, the boys from Company I went down to the pond to swim about twenty minutes after finishing their supper. Captain Enright told the boys if they weren't good swimmers, to stay at the shallow end of the pond. Tehama claimed that he could swim "dog fashion" just before he dove in head first. The boys who witnessed the incident said that he came up once for air and raised his hands and arms in a panic just before he went under and never surfaced again. Two boys, Robert Rains and Albert Rubidoux tried to dive in after him, to no avail. It wasn't until the next morning that they were able to retrieve his lifeless body that had sunk to the bottom of the pond. Tehama is among the boys buried in the Preston School of Industry Cemetery behind the Administration Building. Newsclipping The Death of Sam Goins One story you may have heard while looking into the Preston School history, is the story of Sam Goins. Goins was an African American inmate who was shot by John Kelly or J. Kelley (also seen spelled as Kelly). According to the Amador Ledger, dated April, 19, 1919 entitled “Guard Kills P. I. Escape” states: “Samuel Goins, colored, an inmate of the Preston School was fatally shot by guard J. Kelley last Saturday. Goins escaped from the school the day before and the guards found him at the Thornton Ranch. He threatened to kill anyone who attempted to take him. Kelly, failing to halt him by command, fired to hit him in the leg, but just as he pressed the trigger, Goins stooped to go under a wire fence and the bullet struck him in the back. He lived several hours, and before dying, exonerated the guard, declaring he alone was to blame for the affair. Kelly was acquitted by the coroner’s inquest held Tuesday. The funeral was held in Ione, Wednesday. Goins was a native of North Carolina, aged 20 years. He went to the school from Alameda County for burglary. "--- Samuel Goins was just two months shy of being released when he attempted his third escape. It was reported in the newspapers that ward Joe Lopez, who was with Goins when he died, testified on J. Kelly’s behalf at the inquest. However, the inquest records state that his name was actually Joe Acosta. Acosta claimed that Goins, “tripped going over the fence and he got shot after he tripped over. ” The Circumstances Surrounding Frank Aljers' Death It has been somewhat of a mystery as to how Frank Aljers (aka Alves), a ward at the Preston School of Industry, died from an abscess of the brain; caused by a motorcycle accident in 1922. In "Behind The Walls" I mentioned his death briefly in Chapter 10, as he is one of the 18 boys buried behind the Castle in the Preston Cemetery. After speaking to historian John Lafferty on this subject a while back, he informed me that he uncovered that the accident that caused Frank's inj uries happened on March 28, 1922, in his hometown of Fruitville, California. He arrived to Preston on May 6, 1922 in poor condition and went straight to the school's hospital, where he died a week later. It is unknown what he was sent to Preston for and why they would admit him when his health was in such a bad state, but now we know more of the circumstances that led to his death. Nothing eventful really happened to me except when my friend and I went into a super basic room with pretty much nothing in it and instantly felt strange, the air in that room was so much heavier than anywhere else in the castle. The Superintendent or "Warden" did not kill Anna Corbin, it was a ward, Eugene Monroe, from the school who had been suspected of killing another young woman in 1947, then in 1950 Anna was murdered while he was at Preston on cleaning detail just yards away from Anna's office. Pensar la educación en un país inmerso en un contexto social tan conflictivo y complejo como lo puede ser el colombiano, es una tarea que se debe asumir con precaución; ya que antes de lanzarnos en su defensa es pertinente aclarar nuestra concepción respecto a ésta: considerándola como un espacio de construcción y reflexión del ser.

Dentro de todas aquellas políticas que penden sobre nosotros amenazando con poner en peligro la educación, existen dos aspectos realmente preocupantes. Estos no se relacionan directamente con la desfinanciación de las instituciones que históricamente han cumplido esta labor de vital importancia; sino, con el desmejoramiento de la calidad y con la puesta en marcha de un siniestro sistema encaminado a formar hombres: acríticos, sumisos, con un bajo capital cultural e incapaces de concebir su propia existencia fuera de las fronteras del mercado.

El primero de esos aspectos esta relacionado con la desaparición a futuro (por lo menos en las instituciones públicas) de todas aquellas áreas que carezcan de gran demanda laboral como lo son por ejemplo: las artes y las ciencias humanas (artes plásticas, música, filosofía, antropología, historia, etc.) de esta manera la principal función de la educación se desplaza deliberadamente de la formación personal a la capacitación laboral de los individuos.

La segunda de estas políticas busca la estandarización de los programas educativos en todos los niveles de formación mediante una figura ya un poco familiar para nosotros como las competencias. Es así como el Estado determina el tipo, la cantidad y el nivel de los individuos que “fabricará” el sistema educativo.

Para nosotras es claro que todas estas medidas tenidas por buenas y deseables, son sólo una pequeña muestra de cómo aquellas decisiones políticas que muchos quieren evadir, inciden en todos los ámbitos de nuestra vida, sin darnos cuenta que nuestras posibilidades inmediatas están determinadas por decisiones que toman otros, e ingenuamente confiamos en que éstas serán las mejores para todos.

La situación real es una lucha desarticulada y disfuncional, desinformación o desinterés, inconciencia o impotencia, no existen las armas necesarias para afrontar lo que se vive.

Inquietos por la situación social y política que afronta la comunidad universitaria y el país en general, nos reunimos para manifestarnos como individuos pensantes. Paros, marchas, foros, asambleas,… qué tan lejanos estamos de una realidad que puede tanto evadirse como asumirse. Inmersos en esta nueva problemática y compartiendo los mismos intereses; decidimos plantear una acción que insertara la actividad plástica en el contexto político.

Es así como se realizó una convocatoria donde se le pedía a cada persona que se desprendiera de algo en apariencia insignificante, como era un pedazo de tela, y se le invitaba a llevarlo a la plaza “Che” con el fin de coserlo para vestir a la educación pública. Una procesión de seis personas que cosían mientras caminaban y un hombre desnudo se unieron a la marcha recorriendo en silencio la calle 26, para regresar a la Che, juntar los mantos hasta el momento realizados y continuar toda la tarde sumando retazos a la colcha, en un acto simbólico de trabajar para proteger el cuerpo de ese ser indefenso.

Sin embargo, a pesar de lo importante que era para nosotros poder llevar la acción a buen termino consideramos más interesante entender el lugar y su especificad no sólo como un espacio físico, sino social.. La reunión de personas de diferentes áreas, edades e intereses en torno a la costura, fue más significativo que la acción en sí misma (el acto simbólico que le daba inicio), ya que coser lleva a un estado de reflexión que impregna este acto de sentido mediante el dialogo y el intercambio de pensamiento
